It’s true, a lot of the labeling on leather furniture is confusing. Without the proper information, it can be easy to purchase a furniture item that’s lesser quality than seemingly advertised. This is why Leather Expressions is stepping in. To ensure our customers are always able to make the most informed decisions, here’s leather grades, explained.
Why does Leather Grade matter?
The main, and most important, difference between leather grades is quality. If you buy low grade leather, it’s just not going to be able to stand the test of time. On the other hand, high grade leather will last you 10 – 20 years. Understanding leather grades and their differences will allow you to invest in high quality, durable living room furniture.
What Kinds of Leather Grades are there?
Bonded Leather generally comes at a very cheap price point. Unfortunately, this is reflected by the quality. Perhaps the worst leather grade, bonded leather combines shredded leather scraps together with adhesive glue. This grade is highly prone to flaking apart and has a short lifespan.
Corrected Grain “Genuine” Leather usually begins as a higher quality leather with lots of visual imperfections. In order to combat this, manufacturers will sand the leather down and imprint an embossed grain pattern on the top side. You can tell this apart from a natural Top Grain Leather, because it’s pattern is unnaturally uniform.
Suede feels great, but lacks the durability of higher grade leathers. It is created with a split leather technique. This means that the original leather rawhide has its top grain worn down to reveal a drop split that can be even further sanded down. It’s very thin compared to top grain leather and easily wears out and absorbs liquid.
Top Grain Leather looks good, feels good, and lasts up to 20 years. It’s easy to clean, extremely difficult to puncture, and maintains a gorgeous leather sheen throughout its lifespan. It may not be initially as cheap as bonded leather, but it is well worth the investment. At Leather Expressions, we pride ourselves in stocking top grain leather at the most affordable prices in the U.S.
